EXTRACT
From the New-Year's Wish of the Post who carries the Western Star.
"IF you're a Farmer may your field
Its crops in full abundance yield,
Your fruits and stocks & herds increase,
And you be blest with health & peace,
Good beef and pork and bread & cheese
And beer or cyder which you please.
If you're a Merchant, may a plenty
Of custom and success be sent you;
May crowds around your counter stand,
Prepar'd to trade with cash in hand.
May ev'ry one who Prays and Preaches,
And once a week the gospel teaches,
See piety and truth prevail,
While vice and irreligion fail:
And for his ministerial labours,
Be well supported by his neighbours.
May each Physician in his way,
First heal the sick, then get his pay;
And he, who knows, and pleads the laws,
Obtain his fees if not his cause.
May each young lass receive a Spark,
As gay and sprightly as a lark;
And all the youthful lovers share
The smiles of their beloved fair.
May each Old Maid and Widow find
A Husband suited to her mind;
Each Bachelor procure a wife,
To keep him warm and give him life;
And every newly married pair,
In proper time, behold an heir.
In short I wish you every blessing,
That's worth desiring or possessing."
