TO JAMES H. BLAKE, ESQ. MAYOR.

SIR,

The citizens of Washington have silently waited to learn the decision of the House of Representatives on the motion of one of the members to adjourn Congress for a time until the public edifices are rebuilt—But is it not your duty to call us together at this perilous period, to consider whether we ought not to address the House with a respectful statement of our situation? If Congress should adjourn, can it be expected that this city will not be much deserted and afford a plea for never returning? Can it be expected that appropriations will be made for rebuilding, when Congress shall no longer have in sight all that could work upon the feelings of shame, pride, honor and humanity—And can it be expected that if expense be the plea for not rebuilding, that indemnification will be granted when Congress shall be elsewhere established?—perhaps we may be upbraided hereafter for negligence in not presenting a timely address. Public bodies have not the delicate feelings of an individual; credit or dishonor is weakened by diffusion; and hence arises the ancient complaint of republican injustice and ingratitude. Men so deeply interested as we are in the fate of the pending discussion, will find zealous advocates for justice among members who have witnessed our exertions, and who will make strenuous efforts to have public faith, that jewel of permanent value, preferred to a temporary saving of a sum which may lose millions by destroying public confidence. To your judgment I submit these considerations and the propriety of a meeting of our citizens.

CIVIS.

[Our correspondent will perceive by the advertisement in to-day's paper, that his desire for a Public Meeting is anticipated by a number of the citizens, who have directed its insertion.]
