Washington, March 4th. In the Conference Committee yesterday General Butler moved to amend the legislature bill so as to prohibit newspaper correspondents from holding office under the House. He said ten newspaper correspondents of leading journals were acting as clerks to committees of Congress, three of the Senate side and seven on the House. He thought it due to the independence of the committees, if not of journalism, that the practice should cease. He failed by one vote to secure the amendment.
