Mr. Thomas B. Allen was shot through the heart on Wednesday the 18th, in the streets of Hampton, by Major John B. Cooper, his death was immediate. The Norfolk Beacon gives the following version of the affair:—[N. Y. Evening Star.

We learn that Mr. Allen came into Hampton on Wednesday morning, from his residence in York county, with his wife and children, and stopped at the house of Mrs. Collier, at the eastern extremity of the cross street leading to the Draw Bridge.—Mr. A. had come from his home with the design of taking a trip to the Cape in the Steam Boat Old Dominion, which was going that day on a party of pleasure, but some unexpected business prevented, and he remained with his family and dined at Mrs. Collier's. Shortly after dinner, (between 3 and 4 o'clock,) Mr. Allen walked up the street, taking his two little sons with him, and leaving Mrs. A. in the porch. He had proceeded about 100 yards, when he met Major Cooper, and his son Geo. W Cooper. An altercation immediately took place. and harsh language was interchanged between Maj. C, and Mr. Allen. We learn that two young men who were near at the time of the rencontre, were examined before the inquest, and one of them stated that Mr. Allen struck Major C. several times with his fist—the other deposed that Major C. struck the first blow. The awful result was witnessed by two gentlemen who were passing at the moment in the stage for Old Point.

The stage had just hove fairly in view of the parties, when they saw Major C. draw a pistol and level it at the breast of Mr. Allen. The sight of the pistol so terrified the two children of Mr. A. that they fled with precipitation, crying "oh! he is going to shoot father!" Although these gentlemen saw the pistol levelled at Mr. A. they, knowing nothing of what had preceded, supposed it was done in sportiveness to try the effects on the children, but did not dream of the design. In a moment more the report of the pistol announced the fell purpose, and immediately Major C. raised a heavy stick or club and struck the deceased several powerful blows which felled him to the earth, alas! never to rise again.
