Full Text

In these days of internal improvement, and the aiding of domestic manufactures, we ought to be governed by measures, not men, and ought in all cases to select men who are in favour of such an internal policy, as is demanded by the western people; and we ought to select men who are capable of conveying their ideas to others in a forcible manner. To send a man to congress merely because he is an old settler, and is thought or considered influential by his particular friends, and who is not capable of addressing an assembly with any degree of credit to himself or the cause in which he is engaged, is the very way to keep the western country in the back ground. I opposed the election of Mr. GAZLAY two years ago, upon the ground that I thought him not as capable as Gen. Harrison. I respect GEN. FINDLAY as much as I do any other man; and am as well acquainted with his talents as any other person; and must say, that I do not think him capable; -and I almost suspect the purity of any man's motives who accepts or offers for an office, the duties of which he cannot perform. I am not a personal friend to Mr. Gazlay, but I do not wish to see the counties of Hamilton and Clermont injured, or thrown into the back ground, by sending a man to congress not half so well qualified as he is. I took particular notice of Mr. Gazlay's course last winter at Washington, and am well satisfied that he endeavored with all his power, to serve the people of the west faithfully. I am well satisfied that he is governed by measures, not men; and to change him short of another term, would be to injure this section of the country. I have therefore made up my mind to support Mr. GAZLAY, notwithstanding I may be charged with opposing an old and respectable citizen; which I should not do, if he were capable; but common sense requires me to vote for a man who is capable of doing us the most good, without regard to favouritism.
