—On the night of the 1st inst. the store of Col. T. C. Hackett, which adjoins that of the postmaster, was entered, and a small trunk, containing $500 and valuable papers, was taken. The same night the office of the Clerk of the Inferior Court was broken open, and $50 taken from a desk, secured by an outside and inside lock. The postmaster was immediately suspected of both these thefts by those privy to the robbery at the post office, and a watch was set on him. An amount of money, between $1700 and $1800 dollars, has been received, but Col. Hackett could not identify it as his. The postmaster is in prison; he denies his guilt. This appointment is said to be among the first of the new administration, which is just as likely to be imposed upon as former administrations. The fact, however, shows some of the evil fruits of removing public officers, whose faithfulness has been tried, for the purpose of forwarding partizan objects.
