FIRE STARTED IN GRAND HOTEL AND BURNED UP HALF OF TOWN-NOTHING SAVED
FAIRBANKS, Sept. 26-(By Mail)-
A destructive fire, which started in the kitchen, upstairs, of the Grand hotel at Tanana Wednesday wiped out half of the town, including the Tanana Commercial Company, Chinese restaurant, the Rodman building and two cabins. A strong wind was blowing down the river at the time the blaze started, which prevented saving anything from the buildings destroyed.
Everybody in the town of Tanana and old Fort Gibbon turned out to render assistance and help fight the fire.
The loss to the Tanana Commercial Company, Vachon Bros., amounted to $45,000. The total loss is estimated at $75,000. Vachon Bros. also have a large commercial store in Fairbanks, the business of which is conducted by one of the Vachon brothers, the other brother being in charge of the Tanana business.
