A Pontoon Bridge.—The annexed description of a pontoon train recently constructed for the government, will give the reader a good idea of what these structures are:—

It is composed of 42 wagons, with spare wheels, axles, spokes, hubs, &c., 256 harnesses, 36 India rubber pontoons or floats, with all the timber, planking cables, anchors, forges, &c., sufficient to form a bridge 600 feet in length and 13-1/2 feet in width. It can be thrown, ready for the passage of troops, in 37 minutes. If used as rafts, a brigade of 500 men, with equipage, artillery, &c., can be passed over the Hudson, Sing Sing, or the Mississippi, in ten hours.
