NORMA NORIEGO, LOREN PATRICIO BEING CONSIDERED FOR ROCKEFELLER ART SCHOLARSHIPS THIS SUMMER

Two Papago young people have been nominated as candidates for Rockefeller Foundation scholarships to study art this summer at the University of Arizona.

Because of the widespread interest in the workshop for promising young Indian artists, competition for the 25 all-expense awards is usually keen. Announcement of the winners will be made late in May.

Miss Norma Noriego, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Noriego, and Loren Patricio, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Patricio, all of Sells, are the Papagos nominated for the honors.

Both young people are seniors at Pueblo high school and have been recommended by the art department teachers.

In addition to Papago entries, candidates so far include young persons from Hopi, Navajo, and White Mountain Apache tribes in Arizona and from Zuni and several of the Rio Grande Pueblo groups in New Mexico. Others are expected before the deadline.

Promise of talent in any of the art fields is the basis for consideration. The six-week course will run June 6 to July 16 on the University of Arizona campus. This is the first of four summer workshops which the Rockefeller Foundation is providing, through 1963, at a cost of $94,100.

Among the teachers will be Lloyd Kiva, Cherokee, and Charles Loloma, Hopi. Most of the instructors will be non-Indian.
