Insect problems and ways to combat them during the month of June were cited by the Madison County Extension Office, as follows:
Grain Weevils: June is the month to clean out the empty grain bins and spray the floors and side wall with DDT. Do not pile new wheat on dirty wheat, because losses will be sure to occur due to grain weevils.
Adult Spittlebugs: Spittlebugs that have been growing in the spittle masses in the legume hay fields during the past several weeks will disappear at cutting time, but return by late June.
Legume Seed Crops: Legume seed crops can be treated with 1 1/2 lb of DDT per acre about 20 days after the first cutting is removed before the bloom appears. Treated legumes pastured may ton a DDT kills other seed blasting flies and should be followed with 2 colonies of bees per acre of seed field goal.
