Full Text
The old Democratic party has finally "gone under"-disappeared forever-and there is now nothing of it remaining but two small factional parties, no longer to be feared or dreaded. This will be good news to many thousands, not only of those who have always heretofore opposed the inroads which this old and corrupt party has been making, for years back, on the most valued rights of a free people; but it will be hailed with no less satisfaction by very many who have always acted with, and lent their influence in sustaining and carrying out its many monstrous and destructive measures, under a mistaken belief that their principles were pure, and their only object was to render the "greatest good to the greatest number." But of the hypocrisy of these leaders they have become fully satisfied, and hence we now find them fighting in the ranks of the Opposition, with a firm and determined resolution to use all laudable means for the overthrow and utter annihilation of this wicked pack. A party more corrupt-more debased-more thoroughly rotten at the core-we presume never had an existence in any country, than the Democratic party in this country of the present day. We are rejoiced, therefore, that this engine of evil has been deprived of its power--that the eyes of the people have been opened in time to save the country from the utter ruin to which the leaders of this once dominant and powerful party were fast hurrying her. And not only do we rejoice at this evidence of returning reason, but also in the determination which pervades the whole country, as we think, to inaugurate a new system, and commit the reins of government into the hands of honest and incorruptible Old Abe, who could not if he would, and would not if he could, do aught but what is right. Then let the people work untiringly for Lincoln and Hamlin, and the day of our country's deliverance is not far distant. We refer the reader for the particulars of the doings at Baltimore. Since the above was written, we learn that the Rump Convention have nominated Douglas, and for Vice President Mr. Fitzpatrick, of Alabama. The Seceders ticket is Breckinridge, of Kentucky, and Lane, of Oregon.
