FARM WORK FOR JANUARY.

On the commencement of a New Year the first business of every Farmer and Mechanic should be to settle with his neighbor and balance his books. None can reasonably offer the excuse that they have no cash on hand and must have farther time. Let the items be adjusted and a due-bill or memorandum be given by the party who happens indebted—then payment may be made without wrangling, in seed time, or whenever the cash comes.

The great Dr. Samuel Johnson, who often showed his greatness in small things, advised a friend, who was embarrassed and could not pay all without great sacrifice, to be sure and settle up all small accounts first, and if any debts must lie longer, let them be the large ones, which trouble one less than numerous small bills. Long winter evenings afford a fine opportunity to settle up old accounts. Wood may be cut and hauled better by daylight—Mass. Ploughman.
