Nome's "Back Door" Is Wide Open
NORTHWESTERN ALASKA Chamber of Commerce has channeled much of its resources and time into keeping before the world the need of defense in Northwestern Alaska. A term commonly used here has been that Nome was the back door of America and the door has been swinging wide open for several years with the cold Siberian draft penetrating across the country whose military leaders could not see the weakness in their defense plans.
Col. Willard Pearson's recent remarks about the position of the Free World and Defense in which he refers to Alaska as the "Gibraltar of the North" repeats what Alaskans have stated over and over again.
He calls for greater understanding and use of Alaska for national survival as the doors close in foreign nations.
This calls for better defense within this vast State of which Nome is a very important link and to which a road becomes more vital every day.
With the new administration we are on the threshold of many changes in the defense picture and Alaska may be the key to the whole plan, with the back door carefully protected, a safeguard to the entire free world.
