We commence today the publication of the address delivered by Dr. Bacon at the great gathering of the Whigs at the Tabernacle in the city of New York. We shall continue its publication in convenient numbers until completed, and we hope its length will not prevent our readers from giving it an attentive perusal.
It breathes throughout an American spirit, a spirit of exalted patriotism based on a firm and unshaken belief that the fate and destiny of nations is determined by the use of means employed, overruling and benevolent hand, for the accomplishment of those great and general purposes in which we the actors are perhaps but the unconscious instruments of the great designs our agency is about to accomplish.
The beautiful and forcible illustrations of the truths assumed as applicable to the present time and condition of our country, are drawn from the instructive pages of our own history—from the mighty events and incidents of the revolution, opening and unfolding as they did what had hitherto been the sealed book, touching the capabilities of men to establish and sustain a government based on the principle of equal rights. and exhibiting throughout evidences of the interposition of an overruling hand in determining "the time, the purpose, and the man," and showing by facts and comparisons, that as Washington was the man raised up by the hand of omnipotence for the exact time and purpose of the revolution, and that as he fulfilled his destiny and accomplished the great work given him to do, in establishing the foundations of a nations liberty, that so is Henry Clay fitted, qualified and designed to adorn and to finish the great superstructure of well defined and well regulated liberty, to repair the ravages and breaches it had sustained in its progress thus far, from ruthless, mercenary or unskilful hands, and to give to the towering edifice of American Liberty a glory and a lustre corresponding with the character of its base, and commensurate with the designs of its immortal founder the beloved and sainted Washington.
