Gould Laughs at Compromises.

Mr. Jay Gould laughed when he was asked yesterday whether the St. Louis citizens' committee had been successful in arranging a compromise between him and the strikers on the Missouri Pacific.

"There is no strike on our road," he said. "All our trains are now being handled with ease by the force we have employed in place of the strikers. It is evident from this that there must have been a great deal of 'soldiering' in the past."

"Then there is no prospect of the strikers returning to work?"

"I am sorry to say there is none just now, because their places have been filled. When vacancies occur we will not discriminate against our old employees but at the same time we cannot recognize their union. The citizens' committee has made no arrangement with us."
