Needy families in Cleveland and Toledo passed a gloomy thanksgiving as the relief crisis became graver and Gov. Bricker continued to ignore pleas for a special legislative session made by CIO and AFL unions.
Cleveland has discontinued all but emergency rations for its 60,000 relief cases and discharged one-fourth of the administrative staff. Little help was obtained from the sum of $360,000 made available by diverting surplus tax funds.
In Toledo a survey by the Council of Social Agencies showed that 5,193 persons and their dependents were suffering from lack of food, fuel and clothing, and were in danger of sickness and starvation.
Sec. Kenneth I. Cole of the Toledo Industrial Union Council put the figure as high as 30,000 men, women and children.
Refusal of Gov. Bricker to meet a labor delegation was characterized by Pres. John Owens, of the Ohio CIO as "typical of a man who has failed to live up to this party pledge to feed hungry men and women in the state."
