Carvel Urges Observance
of School Lunch Week

Governor Elbert N. Carvel has invited parents and "all others interested in our schools" to visit, during School Lunch Week October 15-19- public school cafeterias and "learn at first hand the scope and benefits of the School Lunch Program."

In a statement directing attention to the current School Lunch Week observance, the chief executive pointed out that "since the last observance of School Lunch Week, the Delaware program has been expanded until today all but a comparatively few of the 91,490 children presently attending our public school benefit from this program."

"These," he said, "attend the few small schools that still lack lunch facilities."

Governor Carvel also pointed that during the 1961-62 school term, 5,033,100 Type A lunches were served in Delaware's public schools, and 112,062 of these were provided without charge to youngsters unable to pay for their lunches. The cost of this program, according to the gubernatorial statement, was $3,224,891.00 of which $1,698,678.00 was paid by participating students, $454,917.00 was paid by the state and participating school districts, and $129,174 by the Federal Government. It was pointed out that Delaware also received, thru the U. S. Department of Agriculture, commodities valued at $342,562.

After citing the economic aspects of the Delaware School Lunch Program, Governor Carvel advised that "we are proud of our accomplishments in this field and are anxious that as many people as possible become acquainted with this worthy program."

The current observance, according to the chief executive, provides an opportunity for everyone to see the School Lunch Program in actual operation.

In conclusion, Governor Carvel congratulated "all those who help make the School Lunch Program available to the school children of our state."
