A LAW ABIDING PEOPLE.

The law abiding spirit which prevails in Laredo and in Webb county has been amply illustrated during the past few days while developments of the most startling nature have been in progress in connection with the Levytansky murder.

Notwithstanding a most brutal murder had been committed, a murder so atrocious in its conception and so horrible in its execution, though public sentiment had been shocked, public morals outraged, public pride wounded and the reputation of the community had been assailed, the people of Laredo calmly and sensibly listened to the confession of the men who committed the crime and, refusing to themselves violate the law by securing swift and sure, though illegal punishment for the murderers, they resolved to allow the law to take its course, having faith in the consciences and the integrity of the citizenship of Webb county to know that justice will be done.

And now that the confessions have been made, that all the horrible details of the crime have been laid bare, the people of Webb county will supply a jury which will sit in solemn judgment in the case and mete out the punishment the crime demands.

The Times does not doubt that the defendants will have a perfectly fair trial in this county, and that their punishment will be in accordance with the nature of the crime to which they have confessed. A commendable degree of self restraint and coolness has been exercised, more than would have been possible in many other communities, and the circumstances reflects credit on the people as law abiding citizens who are unwilling, because one crime has been committed to perpetrate another.
