Local Cops Won't Use Black-Jacks, Commission Says

Key West police officers will no longer carry black-jacks as a result of a resolution passed last night by the city commission.

Instead, acting on the motion of Commissioner Louis Carbonell, they will be equipped with old-fashioned nightsticks.

Carbonell, who proposed that the nightsticks become part of the policeman's uniform, said that most major cities equip police with them rather than black jacks.

"A black-jack can do a lot of damage, but if a police officer knows how to use a night-stick, he can hold a man off and subdue him without injuring him," said Carbonell.

He added that "we'll avoid a lot of the unnecessary beatings which have been giving the city a lot of bad publicity." The chief of police, Carbonell said, is heartily in favor of using nightsticks instead of black-jacks.

His motion that the city purchase a supply was adopted unanimously.

Carbonell also suggested that, if necessary, out-of-town instructors be brought to Key West to instruct police in the use of the new weapon.
