From a late PHILADELPHIA PAPER:
On PEACE.
FROM Heaven descends sweet smiling Peace,
And bids the storm of war to cease!
Disbanding armies quit the plain,
The thund'ring navies leave the main.
The drum no more, nor martial fife,
Shall call the brave to fatal strife!
Sweet Peace & Spring, join'd hand in hand,
Diffuse their blessings o'er the land.
What scenes before my fancy rise!
What various flags salute my eyes!
On Delaware's majestic tide
The lilies now triumphant ride!
Here Belgia's trade our ports o'erflow.
And there Iberia's treasures glow!
Westward to Mississippi's shore.
The country fills!--For war's no more!
The lengthen'd cords, on ev'ry side
Stretch forth our tents immensely wide!
To thee, Great Ruler of the skies.
(By whom all empires fall or rise)
Let hymns of gratitude ascend,
And every knee submissive bend!
To Gallia's gen'rous monarch's praise,
In every breast an altar raise!
Let WASHINGTON's immortal name,
Loudly swell the trump of fame
That gallant Chief, long press'd with cares
Whose bosom never knew despair!
Him shall the just historian's pen
Shortly proclaim the First of Men:
His wond'rous deeds the muse engage,
And deathless live from age to age!
On PEACE.
