Event Details
A body of about 300 Albanians in service as corsairs plotted secretly to seize Tripoli and establish their own government. On the night of July 31, they attacked and massacred part of the city guards, disarming the rest, then attempted to take the castle but faced vigorous resistance. Cavalry was called to assist, foiling the plot. The Albanians fled to the port and boarded an English ship to escape by sea. Forty laggards were captured, brought to the square before the castle, beheaded, and their heads displayed on the walls.
