In the Virgin Islands today the air is still resounding with praises for the people of the Virgin Islands in paying tribute to President Kennedy and Governor Paiewonsky whose effort to promote our welfare are proving so very successful.
Here are a few excerpts.
Says Interior Secretary Udall:
I am delighted by the action of the Virgin Islands Legislature in proclaiming April 5 as Kennedy-Paiewonsky Day in the Virgin Islands. This action is certainly fitting and proper, and a fine tribute to the outstanding leadership and service you have rendered the people of the Islands during your first year in office as Governor.
The many fine programs initiated by you have aided immeasurably in the advancement of the social, political and economic status of the Islands.
Approval by President Kennedy of the Legislation going forward for an elected Governor shows that he shares the conviction held by you-his partner that the Virgin Islands are fully capable of governing themselves.
It is our hope that the Congress will grant your wish to the last appointed Governor In no area in the true spirit of the New Frontier more evident than in the Virgin Islands and under your dedicated and able leadership, we are confident that your dream to make the Virgin Islands a show-place of the Caribbean will become a reality.
Togo's President Expresses Gratitude
"On my return to Lome, I hasten to send you my most sincere thanks for the warm welcome which you as well as the members of your Government and the population of St. Thomas so kindly showed us in our much too short visit. Be assured that I shall keep for a very long time a most agreeable memory of my stay in your charming Island.
Please accept my most sincere wishes for prosperity and success for the Government and the people of the Virgin Islands, and happiness and continued health for yourself.
Please be good enough to present my respectful regards to Mrs. Paiewonsky. With kindest regards."
