Begging for Quarters.

We learn from the Cincinnati Enquirer, that Captain Read, the infamous shoulder-strapped scoundrel to whom we alluded the other day, and Lenin, his associate in crime, both of whom were convicted at the late term of the Campbell Circuit Court of Kentucky of outrageous interference with the rights of voters at the last August election, and fined heavily, came into Newport in a wagon, accompanied by the jailor of Campbell County on Thursday evening. The Enquirer says:

"We learn that they are on their way to Louisville under writs of habeas corpus, issued by the Hon. Bland Ballard, Judge of the United States District Court for Kentucky.

In addition to the jailor, they were accompanied by R. Tarvin Baker, Senator from that district, and who, it is said, was benefited by their unlawful acts last August. They had flying from their wagon the American flag, as much as to say: 'This flag protects men who interfere with the freedom of elections!'

We have some knowledge of Judge Ballard. He is, as we believe, a good lawyer and an impartial Judge. When he sees the records in these cases, he will doubtless say that he has no jurisdiction, and remand the men, who not only violated the law of Kentucky, but the military orders under which they professed to act.

It will be well to say that Mr. R. Tarvin Baker, who is now the escort of Captain Read, said in his speech in the contested-election case, for Clerk of the Campbell Circuit Court last fall, that he had no defense for Read; that he 'was a brute, and no man could defend his acts.'"
