Full Text

From the Montgomery Journal.

The Huntsville Democrat, staunch Southern Rights paper, has the name of H. W. Collier for governor at his head. It also accompanies his nomination with the following remarks:

"Henry W. Collier.--The Tuscaloosa Observer confirms our impression of Gov. Collier's Burke letter, as submitted to our readers week before last. Satisfied, therefore, that he is no 'tame submissionist,' but that he persists in denouncing the compromise fraud as unjust and oppressive, and is prepared to resist, by State legislation, and every other practicable, constitutional means, the aggressive policy of the general government, in order to restore our equality and preserve our independence, we nail his name to our mast head, as our candidate for governor. With a candidate, whose moral character is not only pure but above suspicion; whose mental ability is acknowledged; whose political integrity is unimpeachable; whose reverence for the Constitution, and such a constitutional Union as our fathers handed down to us, is undoubted; who is for effectual resistance to Northern aggressions, and maintains the right of secession as a last resort; who is a Democratic Republican of the school of Jefferson and Madison--with such a candidate, we say, we have no fear of entering the canvass, no matter who the Clay, Webster, Fillmore & Co., Federal submission candidate may be. Let him be a renegade Democrat, thirsting for federal honors and ready to barter his principles (?) for place, or a full-blooded Federalist dipped in 'Union' whitewash for a disguise, We believe Gov. Collier will distance him. The only thing that can possibly prevent his triumphant re-election will be a division of the Southern rights party by running more than one candidate. We observe that Col. Yancey has been nominated by the Southern Rights' Association of Dallas, and Col. Terry by the Southern Rights' Association of Barbour. We are confident Col. Terry will not permit his name to be used, to divide the party and defeat Gov. Collier; and we hope that Col. Yancey will be content with beating the submission 'war horse of Russell.' The humbug cry of 'Union,' will hardly, we think, enable the submissionists to toll enough Democrats into the federal camp, to enable them to make a respectable showing on the first Monday in August. We call upon all true State rights men, Democrats and Whigs, friends of the Constitution and a constitutional Union, to rally for Henry W. Collier, and Southern equality and independence, and save the State from the curse of federal rule, and the disgrace of unconditional submission to federal encroachments."
