Negro and Arts To Mark History Week

"The Negro and the Arts" will be theme of a two-day art exhibit and an evening symposium held as a cultural highlight in Detroit's observance of Negro History Week.

Both will take place at the Carlton-Plaza Hotel under sponsorship of the Contemporary Arts Group. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28 and March 1.

Participants in the symposium at 8:30 p.m on Saturday will be Hoyt Fuller of the Michigan Chronicle, Mrs. Erma Henderson, founder and district deputy, Lady Camilla IBPOE, and Carl Haessler, Detroit lecturer and journalist. All will discuss Negro participation in the arts both historically and at the present day.

A Tradition

The exhibit open continuously from 1 to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, has come to be a Detroit tradition during observance of Negro History Week.

The showing this year is expected to be of a higher caliber than last year, when Contemporary Arts Group played an active part in the project.

Again this year Detroit artists will be joined by exhibitors from Chicago and New York. Among Detroiters will be Hughie Lee Smith, Charles McGhee, Walter Sanford, Hal Neal, Henri King and Oliver LaGrone, all well known in Detroit art circles.

Chicagoans include Zeke Ziner, designer, print maker, and illustrator among many talents, who had a successful one-man show last year at the Chicago Art Institute; and Margaret Goss Burroughs, water colorist and painter.

Among artists sending work from New York are Charles White, recent winner of a $500 award in the Metropolitan Museum print and design show; Philip Evergood, who had a Detroit show at Garelick's Gallery early this month; Sol Wilson, Harry Gottlieb and Robert Gwathmey.
