J. J. Fleming Found With Hair Aflame After Blast.
Nine persons were periled, one of them being seriously burned, in a gas blast that awoke the south side early today.
J. J. Fleming, 55, 339 6th Ave., is in Emergency hospital with severe burns to the hands, arms and head as the result of the blast. A leaky gas pipe is held responsible. The escape of the others is laid to the fact that every window in the house was blown out and the walls of Fleming's room buckled, letting the gas escape.
Children in Peril.
Those in the house at the time, in addition to Fleming, were Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hart, their four children, ranging in age from 4 to 12 years; Fred Hart, and Lydia Schultz, a roomer.
The concussion was felt for blocks. The explosion was heard for more than a mile.
The occupants of the house were awakened by the explosion shortly after 5 a. m. The children were sleeping in the room next to Fleming's.
His Hair Ablaze.
Running into Fleming's room, the family found his hair in flames and the bed clothing also on fire. Hastily they extinguished the blaze by wrapping the man in several quilts and hurried him to the hospital.
