Herbert Burrowes, a New York architect, was killed at Matawan on Monday of last week. He was on a Long Branch accommodation train, which was approaching the crossing just as a Long Branch express came rushing into sight. The engineer of the accommodation train put on the brakes, but the wheels slipped on the wet tracks and a collision seemed inevitable. As the only chance he threw the throttle wide open and made for the crossing at full speed. The last car had just cleared it when the express rushed past. The passengers on the accommodation train were panic-stricken, and a number rushed to the doors of the cars, intending to jump off, but, with the exception of Burrowes and two others, they were restrained by the train hands. Burrowes landed on a pile of stones and was killed. He was taken to Keyport, where he lived with his father, Thomas Burrowes. The unfortunate young man was 19 years of age and was a student at Peddie Institute, Hightstown, about three years ago. His father is a member of the Board of Corporators of the Institute.
