Full Text

Niles' Register
From the New-York Gazette.

A seizure has recently been made in this city, by the officers of the Customs, of twenty-seven cases of fine Leghorn hats. The facts, as they have been communicated to us, are briefly as follows:—The hats were regularly imported into New-York from Italy, and entered for exportation: they were shipped for Havana, and the drawback, upwards of 50 per cent. was allowed upon them. At Havana, each case was carefully concealed in a hogshead of coffee, and put on board of a vessel for this city, where, on their arrival, they were entered as twenty-seven hogsheads of coffee. From this place, the intention was to ship them to Philadelphia, and they were accordingly put on board of one of the packets regularly trading to that port. But it so happened, that the officers here obtained some inkling of the affair. By boring the hogsheads, the cases were found snugly deposited; and being taken possession of, a pretty effectual barrier was opposed to their further migration. The marshal has libelled the hats and coffee above mentioned.
