Messrs. U. Marinoni, A. Marquez, A. Block, C. Jumonville, E. Gelpi, A. Britton, John Olmstead, H. Griffo, F. Roder, H. Labasse, O. V. Fernandez, and others:
Gentlemen - Your communication of the third instant requesting me 'to accept of election to the Directory and serve as the next President of the Crescent City Railroad Company,' is at hand.
In reply, I beg leave to say, that in October or November last, at urgent solicitation, I reluctantly consented, upon certain conditions, if it was the desire of a majority of the stockholders, to accept the position of President of the Crescent City Railroad Company, if elected, it being understood that I would do so in connection with my duties to the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad Company, and that no active participation in the election on my part would be expected,
The attention and study required to manage an interest of this nature has caused me to hesitate in undertaking this charge.
Understanding, however, that your letter conveys the request of a majority of the stockholders, and as I am informed that the enhanced value of the stock is due to this contemplated arrangement, I feel compelled to accede to this request, and will take pleasure in giving my attention to the position, if elected, and in being associated with the gentlemen that have been suggested as Directors, Messrs. Marinoni, Marquez, Labasse and Roder.
Please accept my assurances that I appreciate this expression of your confidence.
Very respectfully,
W. VAN BENTHUYSEN
