THE TAXPAYERS' MEETING.
The people of Cairo seem terribly earnest in their determination to resist the payment of the taxes levied upon their property to provide for the payment of the interest on the city and county bonds issued to the C. & St. L. and C. & V. railroad companies. Fully two hundred persons—all of them taxpayers—were present at the meeting Tuesday night, and upon all motions and resolutions looking to a resistance of payment of such taxes, the vote was unanimously "aye." The magnitude and character of the undertaking was not under-estimated yet the unanimous determination was to make the issue with the State, and fight it to a final conclusion.
Well, the stream is passed, and the bridge burned. There is no avenue left open for retreat. The fight must go on. How vigorously it is prosecuted, depends of course, upon the people generally and upon the committee to whom is charged the duty of securing means to defray expenses, particularly. The report of this committee, to be made next Tuesday evening, will show, we dare say, that means for vigorous and protracted warfare, have been provided. Attend the meeting, and "keep the ball rolling."
