WOUNDED BY .22
UP SHEEP CREEK
Willard Prouty, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Paul Prouty, was injured in the upper leg yesterday afternoon by an accidentally aimed bullet from a .22 caliber rifle.
The accident occurred while Prouty and his two companions, Roger Pegues and Harold Sunderland, were returning from a hike to the top of Sheep Mountain behind Thane, at a point well off the Sheep Creek trail.
The bullet passed completely through the upper leg, leaving a clean wound. Pegues applied a tourniquet and tended Prouty while Sunderland ran all the way down the trail and to Thane for help.
Highway Patrolman Emmet Botelho happened to be on the scene, and several other men responded to the call for assistance, including Dan Livie and R. Cooper. Young Prouty was carried to the trail, then placed on a stretcher for the trip down to the end of the road. He is resting easily today in St. Ann's Hospital.
