Ladies Skating.
Squam river is to be the great place for skating, as the stream is drawn low during the day, and rises over the snow in places, forming new glare ice at night. Ladies, keep your eye out for it. Speaking of ladies indulging in this glorious amusement, a lady writing to a New York paper, talks thus sensibly on the subject:
"English ladies are perfect adepts in this art, and to their practice of it owe much of their wonderful brightness and clearness of complexion, which they retain long after their American sisters have forfeited their claim to delicate loveliness. It is a brilliant sight to see the glittering surface of a beautiful lake or pond cut into myriads of fantastic shapes by the swift evolutions of a hundred gay, laughing, revolving female figures—their dazzling complexions, and bright eyes dancing in their own light, looking out so bewitchingly from amid the mass of furs, velvet and feathers.
Then, talk of a ball-room or dancing in order to fall in love! Why, it does not afford half the opportunity that is discovered by taking a few lessons in skating. The putting the skates on the delicate little feet, and fastening the straps—how long it takes, sometimes! Then the charming little fears and screams—the slight touch of a hand to a wrist, in order to assist—the race and the being caught—the tender anxiety about taking cold, and the compliments on one's courage, skill, and grace, are worth all the polkas and redowas in the world."
