Last Evening a very melancholy Occurrence happened in this Town, as Mr. JONATHAN LOWDER, Post-Rider from Boston to Hartford, with Mr. Hyde, each of them on Horse-back, were riding through a narrow Lane between Summer-street and Pond-Lane, just below the New-South Meeting-House, Mr. Hyde discovering a Truckman endeavouring to clear his Trucks that had got entangled with a Cart, went on the opposite Side, expecting Mr. Lowder to follow; but the Truckman pulling his Horse's Head over that Way Mr. Lowder endeavoured to pass the other Side; when one of the Shafts striking against his Horse, startled him and threw him off, and struck his Head against the Wheel, which went over his right Shoulder; down his Side: Mr. Hyde immediately dismounted, and carried him into a House that was nigh, and Surgeons were immediately sent for: He had his Senses till they came in, but died in about an Hour.
The Accident happened on the Birth-Day of Mr. Lowder, having completed 55 Years. He returned the beginning of this Week from Philadelphia, having been employed by Mr. Hancock to attend him on his Tour thither. He was well known and respected in those Places where he has been employed to do Business.
