TROUBLE FEARED AMONG DAKOTA INDIANS.

ST. PAUL, March 27 (Special).—An army officer at Fort Buford, Dak., writes to The Pioneer Press: "Rumors of trouble with the Indians at Poplar River are coming with the approach of spring, and from all I can learn I would not be surprised at any time to hear of the massacre of the agent and his family. The present incumbent took charge last January, making the fourth agent in a little more than that number of years. He refuses to listen to complaints of Indians and is consequently unpopular, and the Indians set to work to devise means to get rid of him. This culminated a few weeks ago in an attempt to hang him, which would have been carried out had it not been for the presence of troops, who were called upon to keep the peace. The agent has, apparently, lost his power of usefulness with the Indians. He is now trying to have four or five of the chief men arrested and taken to Leavenworth Prison. If this is done, the Indians will revolt. Poplar River has always been a troublesome place. The Indians have never been satisfied, and there is no good reason why the agency should not be discontinued and the Indians transferred to Standing Rock, where they would be intelligently and honestly treated."
