He then adds. "I accept the nomination, as a compliment to my inflexible American sentiments, and as a duty I owe to those Americans who so firmly adhere to their American principles, with the express understanding, however, that if the American party can be united on Mr. Fillmore, or such a platform as I now occupy, I may be at liberty at any time thereafter, to withdraw this acceptance."
Notwithstanding the diversity of feeling which seemingly prevails among the various factions and isms of the free States, yet there exists between them a sympathetic cord which binds them together as one man on this point at least, namely, hostility to the rights of the South. On this ground they all unite in one common brotherhood, and it cannot be doubted that their support will be given to the candidate of their own stripe, whose chances of being elected they may consider lost. Col. Fremont's prospects appear to be looming up, and we take it for granted, that the whole free-soil-abolition vote will be concentrated upon him. Mr. Fillmore will be left far in the rear, and Com. Stockton will give way to the mule-soup man. Somebody is bound to be beat in the race, but Buchanan will not be that man.
