In an effort to provide better fishing for Montana residents and visiting tourists as a sound business policy, Montanans, Inc., the State Chamber of Commerce announced from their Helena Office today the formation of a three point plan whereby many Montana streams will be stocked with 5 to-7 inch trout.
Under the scheme, sportsmen's organizations, chambers of commerce, and the state game commission will cooperate to stock suitable waters. Chambers of commerce will be asked to provide funds to be used by the game commission for the exclusive purpose of stocking waters adjacent to the contributing communities with trout. Planting of the fish will be assisted and directed by local sportsmen's clubs.
According to John W. Schofield, superintendent of hatcheries of the game department, approximately 5,000 5 to 7 inch trout can be raised for $100.
Thomas N. Marlowe, prominent Missoula attorney and sportsman, who served as chairman of the game commission for many years, in commenting on the plan said, 'It's a fine idea and has all the merit of logic and sound business policy in its favor. Stocking of our streams with one and two inch fish is in many waters a waste of sportsmen's money. Montana sportsmen and businessmen should get behind Montanans, Inc., and help put the idea across.'
B. L. Price, chairman of the commission, stated that, because of the relatively small population of the state and its tremendous size that funds derived from the sale of fishing licenses were inadequate to properly stock Montana streams and lakes. 'The plan presented by Montanans, Inc., to the state game commission at their last meeting should receive serious consideration from businessmen and sportsmen. It is entirely workable and should do much to improve our fishing.'
C. R. McClave, president of Montanans, Inc., when questioned regarding the proposal, stressed the importance of fishing as a major attraction in drawing vacationists to Montana.
Said President McClave, 'It is a safe conclusion that out-of state fishermen spend $100 with businessmen for every dollar of license money that goes to the state. Therefore, we think it good policy for businessmen to give their financial support to the game department so that they may plant more fish and thus attract the visiting fishermen.'
L. W. Wendt, Great Falls, president of the Montana Wildlife Federation heartily endorsed the project. 'Sportsmen can't help but appreciate the herculean task of the game commission in stocking all our streams and lakes,' said Mr. Wendt. 'The state is large and population small. Every sportsmen's organization in Montana should get behind the plan.'
Within the week, according to Montanans Inc., the three point plan will be presented to every chamber of commerce and commercial organization in the state and definite methods of putting the idea into operation will be drawn.
