Post's Virtue
Representative A. P. Ardourel requested the Herald editor to give the truth as to the abominable charges made against Representative Phil B. Stewart by that foulest of all papers, the Denver Post. Ardourel says, "I was on the committee which drafted what is known as the long appropriation bill. Heretofore it has been customary by all legislatures to vote an especial sum for the speaker of the house, between $500 and $1,000, to remunerate him for the extra expense to which he naturally must go. I know of a fact that Mr. Stewart spent several thousand dollars as speaker of the house for which he will never get any pay. He spent the money for the good of beneficial legislation. When we were fixing up the bill the question of voting $1,000 to Mr. Stewart was considered. One of the committee said Mr. Stewart had asked that this appropriation be not made. After that I called on Stewart in reference to the matter and he asked that we omit that part, that he did not need the money and did not want it, and would not take it if appropriated. Consequently it was omitted. When the bill came before the house, one of the men who had fought Stewart all season moved to insert this appropriation. Mr. Stewart requested that it be eliminated but it was passed, every member in the house except Mr. Stewart voting for it. He voted against it and said he would not take the money. Now comes the rotten Post and in its self-righteousness says it will save the people that money. If Mr. Stewart wants it, he can take it. Surely he is entitled to it; but he will not take it, and then the Post will claim that it saved the money to the people. Was there ever anything more despicable?"
Perhaps there have been more despicable deeds done, but if so they were done by the Denver Post. No other outfit is so lost to all shame and decency, to all elements of honor and honesty as is the Post. Some day that outfit will get what is coming to it. Just how, this paper is not able to tell, but some day retribution will be visited on the heads of the proprietors of the vilest and most hypocritical sheet in the world.--Boulder Herald.
