HORRIBLE OCCURRENCE.

Our town was startled yesterday evening with the report of a most foul and brutal murder and attempt at suicide, by a man named Geo. W. Slocum, who was engaged at work upon the premises of Mr. Jacob Hare a short distance in the country. It appears that Slocum, who had formerly lived in Goshen Townships, Delaware county, and has been a seafaring man, had been for some time on bad terms with his wife and was jealous of her. On yesterday afternoon he attempted to cut her throat with a razor, when she resisted and wrested the weapon from his hand. He then seized an axe, and cleft her skull killing her instantly. He then attempted to cut his own throat but did not succeed, before he was arrested and lodged in jail. His wounds are not regarded as dangerous. The verdict of the Coroner's jury was in accordance with these facts.

Never has there been a time when a series of shocking occurrences in this region have followed so closely upon the heels of each other.—Statesman.
