CANCER SOCIETY CONCERNED WITH FIGHT ON LEUKEMIA

Raleigh.--The American Cancer Society is fully engaged in the struggle against leukemia. Current grants represent an expenditure of nearly $400,000, a level of support exceeded only by appropriation of the Federal government. This research on leukemia is concerned with all aspects of the disease-- its cause, its course, its cure.

Moreover, because of the evidence suggesting a virus relation to leukemia, it is pertinent to note that the Society is supporting some 40 grants in the virus research field, which represents an expenditure of about $1,205,000.

Annually, leukemia kills more than 2,000 children under 15 years old. Each year cancer claims the lives of more school children than any other disease.

Mrs. Chauncey Meekins, Chairman of the Dare County unit of the American Cancer Society, says the general public may not understand that leukemia, as one of the deadlier forms of cancer, greatly concerns the Society. While it may be well known that leukemia is a fatal disease, it is not widely understood that leukemia is a cancer of the blood-forming organs.
