Full Text

Charleston, July 7.

Captain Monroe was boarded yesterday, a few miles East of the light-house, by a Spanish felucca. They detained him several hours, during which time they were constantly employed in plundering—taking from the captain and passengers, all their money, three pair of pistols, several cutlasses, wine, porter—and, in short every article they could possibly carry off.

The privateer is under Spanish colours, but her crew is composed of a motley collection of all nations, some of whom were recognized as being formerly residents in this city. They informed capt. Monroe, that they had a few days before sent a British brig into this port. [The Experiment, which arrived on Thursday last; the prize-master of which stated, that the felucca was a letter of marque from St. Andero.] Some of the privateersmen drew their knives and daggers, and threatened to stab the people on board the schooner.
