A ROYAL HOST
MITCHELL DELEGATION GIVEN TIME OF LIVES ON WEDNESDAY—BASEBALL TEAM BEATS LETCHER, 19 TO 7.
There is one city in South Dakota that likes to have 'company' and takes no pains to conceal the fact. The aforesaid municipality is Woonsocket, one of the busiest and cleanest cities in the territory around Mitchell, where yesterday many visitors from the Corn Palace City attended the opening day of the fourth annual water carnival.
The water carnival is an event distinctive with Woonsocket, whose citizens have created a beauty spot in the heart of the city out of an unsightly morass and made it an attraction worthy of the considerable advertising it receives. Every which is set in the midst of streets of handsome homes and adjoins the main thoroughfare of the business district.
As for Mitchell's part of the entertainment yesterday, it opened when the procession of cars from this city was met three miles out of Woonsocket by a steam calliope and then escorted into town. At 1 o'clock with streamers flying and bands playing, the visiting automobiles paraded the city.
One of the pleasing features of the reception was the presentation of a monster key to the city of Woonsocket, presented by L. L. Lawson, president of the water carnival association, to T. J. Morgans, secretary of the Mitchell Commercial club. This act, typical of the courtesy and open hospitality of Woonsocket in turning over the freedom of the city, was one greatly appreciated.
As to the carnival features, there is much to be said. The best method to learn of them is to see them, not read about them. Various aquatic features are given on the lake and the streets are alive with the attractions of the carnival company. Bands are playing on every corner. In the evening, dancing and the amusement attractions are the chief diversion.
The baseball game, in which Mitchell defeated Letcher by a 19 to 7 tally, commenced in regular fashion, came near being a riot, and finally ended with a rout. Manager Heinie Scharnweber and his Mitchell Braves driving the enemy to cover with a 42-centimeter bombardment that could not be stopped. It also was a happy occasion for one Harry Feltis, late of Letcher, who for the second time in four days drubbed his former team-mates.
In the first three frames, Letcher annexed a trio of runs. Duncan scored in the second on Sammis' triple to center field and two more runs counted in the third when Scharnweber stuck in the quagmire around second base and Yargen's Texas leaguer dropped in safe territory. In the third, Duncan was retired from short in favor of Krinklen because of his bobbles. With the bases full, Mitchell got her first run when Mernaugh walked Murphy and forced Peck home.
It looked like the preliminary to a Donnybrook fair in the last of the fourth. Matt Thill, a home talent umpire, called Gilmore out on a third strike that rubbed his shoestrings. This naturally roiled the Scharnweber crew and for a moment hostilities seemed imminent. Feltis was hit in the back and gained first. Roy Peck, who looks like a comer, hit to right field and Feltis tallied on Sammis' wild heave to third.
Letcher counted three times in the fifth on timely hits and a passed ball by Tift, who made his debut for Mitchell behind the plate. In the last of the inning, Scharnweber was given life on the bags with a ball to the shoulder. Krumlein followed through with a wallop to right field. Murphy, whose first name is Jerry, forced out Krumlein by hitting him with a batted ball. Manager Heinie came home on Harter's single to right, Gilmore's double to center scoring Murphy. Feltis grounded to Sammis and Harter tallied, tying the score. Tift singled. Krinklen's boot saved Peck and paved the way for Seney's triple to right, which scored Tift and Peck.
Two runs behind, Letcher scored in the seventh when Shirk quirmed in front of the ball and forced Krinklen in with the bases full. Feltis hit safely in the second half of the frame and came home on Seney's double to center. In the first of the eighth, Hyatt and Yaryen both hit safely, but failed to score.
The last of the eighth left no room for argument, when the Braves started a fusillade that did not cease until ten men had counted runs. Feltis, Tift, Scharnweber, Seney, Murphy, Gilmore all had the range for Letcher's twirler and did not stop until the burlesque grew tiresome. The ninth inning was featureless.
