"You, among other questions, ask my opinion who will have a majority of votes for Governor, at the ensuing election? to which I answer, the generous, the brave, the immortal Hancock, no doubt—there now appears to be a large majority in favor of him in this town and Charlestown, as well as all the country towns to the westward, from whence I have had any intelligence—and who, my dear friend, can we think of more likely to save our sinking country in the present political storm? He has been a friend, a benefactor, and under God the saviour of our land, his purse was ever open to our necessities—and for my own part, I think there is not a person in the world so likely to extricate us from our present difficulties; and I really look on it as a smile from Heaven that his health is so far restored as to enable him to attend to the business of that people whose prosperity has always lain nearest his heart. There yet is, however, as there always has been, a tory and misled party against him—but, thank God, their numbers, compared with the virtuous ones of America, are yet small."
