It appears that Auditor French, Commissioner of Railroads, is on the rack. Last winter he made a sweeping complaint against the Central Pacific Railroad Co., charging that that corporation had willfully diverted money which should have been paid into the Treasury on account of the sinking fund and that the company were leasing for themselves auxiliary lines of road upon which freights were carried independent of the main line. Upon this information an injunction was issued to restrain the company from declaring a dividend until the deficit was made up. A suit is now pending in charge of the Attorney General. During his visit to this coast, ostensibly to secure testimony for the prosecution, he has written a most remarkable letter to the President of the company, withdrawing the case, without making any official report to the Department of the causes which has led to this change of base. A dispatch of the 19th instant says that French will be called upon for an explanation and then removed, which sounds as if the case against him had already been prejudged and his dismissal only awaiting the formality of an investigation. Gen. Rush, of Wisconsin, is mentioned as a probable candidate for the position.
