The Legislature of the Commonwealth of Virginia (in order to make immediate provision for the sum of ninety thousand dollars in the present emergency of affairs, in compliance with the requisition of Congress of the 21st of October last) have passed a law (to continue in force for one year) enacting, "That after the first of January, 1788, an additional duty of six shillings per hogshead on every hogshead of tobacco, passed at and shipped from any public warehouse within that Commonwealth, shall be paid to the inspectors of such warehouses respectively, for the time being, at the time of the delivering out the tobacco for exportation, to be accounted for by the inspectors, and paid into the treasury at the following periods, viz. the first day of March, the first day of October, and the 31st day of December; for which they will be allowed two and an half per cent."
