MUDDY TRACK HANDICAP FOR BLUE LARKSPUR

CHICAGO, July 12. (U.P.) The elements seem to have a grievance against Blue Larkspur.

Regarded by many as the best track three year old of the year, Larkspur three times has encountered mud in important races and it appeared today that 'the jinx' will handicap him again when he starts in the $75,000 American classic here tomorrow.

The Arlington Park track was soaked thoroughly by rain yesterday and showers were predicted for this afternoon.

Until the rain fell, Larkspur was the favorite in the betting but the wet track sent the odds on Clyde Van Dusen and Windy City scurrying downward. Van Dusen won the Kentucky Derby in mud and Windy City took the American Derby in heavy going.

The rain was a blow to Col. E. R. Bradley, Blue Larkspur's owner, but he was undaunted in his determination to start his horse.

The mud will make little difference to several horses in the race. Notable among these is Rose of Sharon, the best filly of the year and one of the favorites in the betting.

Eighteen horses are expected to start. Larkspur, Van Dusen, Dr. Freeland and Windy City are weighted the heaviest, each carrying 126 pounds.
