Charged That 20,000,000 Francs Were Spent in Bribes.
Paris, Dec. 17.—Acting on orders from the government, the police today searched the house of M. Laur, Boulangist member of the chamber of deputies, and seized a number of documents pertaining to the Panama affair. The ministry will ask the chamber of deputies to authorize the arrest of any of the members found to have been implicated in the scandal. Libre Parole, M. Drumont's paper, which appears to be exceptionally well informed on Panama matters, states today that the amount of bribes distributed by the agents of the company reach the enormous total of 20,000,000 francs. Figaro says that the trial of the directors of the company before the correctional tribunal will proceed concurrently with their prosecution on the charge of corruption before the assizes court. Eclaireur says that among the papers seized belonging to Count de Lesseps several were found signed by three directors giving full revelations of the affairs of the company. The minutes, it adds, cover the transaction of several years.
