Full Text
Two female societies have been formed in Paris, for the purpose of promoting the conversion of trinkets, jewels, plate, and other valuables, into money, for the public. The first is composed of the wives and daughters of artists, architects, painters, sculptors, and of all other professions connected with design. The second society is composed of the wives of jewellers, goldsmiths, toymen, and others of the same class. They have each nominated a Lady President. They have also resolved,
1. That it is honourable for women to be permitted to contribute to the public necessities.
2. That it is laudable in wives and mothers to sacrifice articles of luxury, to the advancement of a constitution.
3. That the conversion of gold and silver trinkets into specie, being one means of augmenting the coin, the Assembly will receive nothing else.
4. That the honour conferred on the first deputation, reflects lustre on the whole sex; and that therefore the Assembly will be content with transmitting the contributions to the Assembly, with a simple address, without desiring admission by deputation.
They are to accept of jewels or plate down to the smallest article, and the ladies who have neither jewels nor plate of gold or silver, may convert other ornaments into money, and transmit the amount, not less than six livres. Both the Lady Presidents have taken an oath to conceal the amount of the several subscriptions; but the names of the contributors are to be registered.
