"There are a lot of Congressmen who do not know that Alaska has a flag," said Bill Stookey of the Stookey Glass Company of Anchorage as he gave an Alaska flag to Walter J. Hickel to take back to Washington, D.C. with him. Hickel is going to Washington to assist in educating the members of the House of Representatives on the merits of statehood for Alaska.
In accepting the flag Hickel said, "It is high time we Americans practice what we preach. We talk about the dignity of man and equality throughout the world. So let Congress start at home by granting equality to Americans in Alaska."
Asked about the chances of the statehood bill passing the House, Hickel said, "It's going to be a tough battle, but we are going to fight with all our might."
While in the states Hickel will confer with top Republican party officials, including Leonard Hall, Republican National Committeeman.
