15-year-old Ada Depratt, working as a domestic adjoining the jail, became infatuated with one of the prisoners Jess Cherry or James Drew, charged with robbing a store at Swartz, Mo. They induced her to provide a steel saw promising to take her away. While working on the cell bars, a passerby reported to Sheriff Baugh. The men, thinking she betrayed them, told the sheriff she gave the saw. Upon learning this, she attempted suicide.
