CRONSTADT, in Transylvania, September 14. General Essen, taking Advantage of the Turks neglecting to guard the Passage of the Argish, marched the 15th of August against Giurgewo. In the second Day's March he met the advanced Posts of the Turks, whom he defeated, after which he penetrated to the second Moat of the Fortress, in which there was a Palisado. The Russians were stopped at this Place, as they did not perceive the Palisado, it being covered by the Water in the Moat. The Turks, who had waited for them at that Passage, redoubled their Fire, and killed Colonel Pocunkow, and many Officers, and forced them to retire in Disorder. Lieutenant General Essen was slightly wounded in the Foot, but Major General Czartoryski, and the Generals Aufusov and Husowiez were dangerously wounded. The Russians had seven Hundred Men killed, and twenty five Hundred wounded. They left eight Pieces of Cannon, passed the Argish precipitately, and were very much harassed by the Turkish Cavalry. The Ottomans lost very few Men on this Occasion, but this Action was fatal to Sultan Mazcud Guerai, who was drowned as he was going to the Castle to animate his Men, by the Bridge being greatly battered by the Russians, so that it fell in as he was passing over it.
